Meet a Shocker: Desmond Cockrell

Desmond Cockrell, from Tulsa, advises fellow Shockers to take advantage of people on campus who offer advising, counseling and career help. He is the first of four siblings to earn a bachelor’s degree and hopes his story can encourage others to succeed in college.

What degree will you be earning in May?

I will be earning a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with a major in graphic design.

What is your hometown?

Tulsa, Oklahoma

 What made you choose ϱ?  

I chose WSU for affordability and familiarization.

What has been your biggest challenge as a student, and how did you overcome it?

My biggest challenge as a student is time management. Buying an agenda and following it helped me overcome procrastination.

What's your favorite off-campus location in Wichita?

My favorite off-campus location is the Towne East Square.  I enjoy shopping and grabbing a quick snack from KarmelKorn Shoppe.

What would be the title of your autobiography? 

I would title my autobiography, “0-21-21-100 (Zero to 21. 21 to 100) The life of Desmond Cockrell.”

What are your plans after graduation?  

I plan to work as an UI/UX designer at NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston.

What advice would you give other ϱ students? 

Utilize campus resources early! I recommend scheduling regular appointments with a financial advisor, faculty advisor, and Shocker Career Accelerator advisor.
